Looks fantastic

By May there was a scattering of flowers on the wall fruit trees. I was rather proud to have recovered the original espalier framework after decades of neglect, which with any luck would result in some apples and pears in the autumn and a bumper crop next year. The first bed was greening over with beans, potatoes, onions and even some early carrots that could only just be seen if one bent double and looked along the row.
Jake had very helpfully covered the rows of seedlings and cabbage plants with some chicken wire, much I imagined, to the chagrin of the local rabbits and pigeons. Jake had pretty much moved to Bowsley full time and had clearly spent a lot of time hoeing between the rows.
Amidst much laughter I guided Bella, blindfolded and clinging to my arm, down the path to the far end of the Kitchen Garden. I carried a basket with a picnic and a tartan picnic blanket thrown over my shoulder.
Finally, we stopped, and I allowed her to remove the blindfold where she stood shielding her eyes against the sun.
‘I don’t understand, what am I looking at?’ she asked.
‘This Bella, is your very own cut flower border. Welcome to ‘Bellas’s Patch’ ’
‘Oh Jake, that is so thoughtful of you.’ she said, as I laid out the picnic blanket and opened the basket. Two wine glasses, one bottle of red, some bread, a piece of Brie and a brown bag filled with cherries made the perfect spread.
‘What are those yellowing leaves over there?’ she asked pointing to the left.
‘I transplanted some bluebells from the woods.’
‘But there are thousands of bluebells there and much nearer to the house’
‘I know, I just wanted to fill this area up for you and I started with these. I had planted them out before I put 2 and 2 together.’
Bella laughed.
‘And these?’ she asked pointing to a row of lime green seedlings.
‘Zinnias, if the slugs don’t eat them all first. I will pick up some slug pellets for the next time I come and that should give them a fighting chance.
Just don’t tell Tanya – I don’t think I can bear another lecture on the sanctity of life.’
Bella laughed again, ‘My sister can be a bit full on at times, but she means well. She just feels things more deeply than most of us’
I showed her the Phlox just beginning to show colour due to my late sowing, ‘You can begin picking those now,’ and next to the Phlox I pointed out the feathery leaved Cosmos, which would soon provide the house with an abundance of clouds of pink and white flowers.
‘If you look carefully, you might find some Sweet William ready to be cut’
‘How many can I take?’ she asked sipping her wine.
‘It’s up to you, this is your cut flower border, take what you want’ I said, handing her my secateurs.’
‘Mark this is amazing, it really is a credit to you and all your hard work’
To be honest I could never have done all this without Jake he has been amazing, especially when I have been in London.’
‘Honestly, you two are like peas in a pod’.
‘Are they Peonies over there?’
Yes, a friend was dividing her Peonies and she said that I could help myself. Probably wont get many flowers this year or next but then you should have more than you can possibly find vases for. In fact that is what gave me the idea for Bella’s Patch. And a client asked me to divide her Iris’s so I have planted some of the spares, mostly Indigo and Yellow but there may be some other colours, we will just have to wait and see.
‘Oh I could paint them, I can’t wait.’ she said.
Bella was an talented artist, and her work brightened up many of the rooms and hallways of the main house/
And over there I have planted some Lilac suckers but it will be a few years before you can gather lilacs in the spring time or anytime soon.
I have also planted a few Dahlias that should take you through to autumn but I am at a loss for winter unless I can get hold of some daffodil bulbs.’
‘I wouldn’t worry too much, it’s so cold here in the winter that nobody comes to Bowsley Park, not even for Christmas.’
It was time to get back to the kitchen as I had promised to help Bella make lunch so we packed up the picnic and made our way back but not before I stopped at the end of one of the vegetable strips.
‘Et voila’
‘Rhubarb?’
‘Of course, I don’t want you to have any excuse not to make your amazing Rhubarb crumbles’
‘I just knew there had to be an ulterior motive. You are as bad as Richard’.
